Bucktail Jigs for Tigerfish, Nembwe & Bream

Bucktail jigs are highly effective for a wide range of African freshwater predators and sportfish. Smaller 1/16 oz to 1/8 oz models excel for Bream and Nembwe, while 1/4 oz to 1 oz bucktails are ideal for aggressive Tigerfish. The natural movement of bucktail hair creates a lifelike action that continues even when paused, making these jigs deadly when cast, jigged, or retrieved through current, structure, and baitfish schools. Available in a variety of proven colours and hook sizes to match local conditions and target species.

For targeting Tigerfish, Nembwe, and Bream with bucktail jigs, lure size should match the species and the forage they are feeding on.

Bream (Tilapia species)

• 1/16 oz (1.8g) to 1/8 oz (3.5g)
• Hook sizes: #6 to #2
• Bucktail length: 25–50mm
• Best for clear water, finesse presentations, and smaller baitfish.

Nembwe (Vundu/Nembwe Cichlids)

• 1/8 oz (3.5g) to 1/4 oz (7g)
• Hook sizes: #2 to 1/0
• Bucktail length: 40–70mm
• Natural colours such as olive, brown, white, and chartreuse work well.

Tigerfish

Small to Medium Tigerfish

• 1/4 oz (7g) to 3/8 oz (10.5g)
• Hook sizes: 1/0 to 3/0
• Bucktail length: 60–90mm

Large Tigerfish (Kariba, Zambezi, Jozini, Cahora Bassa)

Recommended All-Round Range

If you're stocking bucktails for all three species, focus on:

• 1/8 oz (#2–1/0 hooks) for Bream and Nembwe.
• 1/4 oz and 3/8 oz (1/0–3/0 hooks) for Tigerfish and larger Nembwe.
• White, chartreuse/white, olive/white, and black/red are proven colours.
