Yellowfish Hard baits - Cranks and Jerkbaits
Yellowfish Hard baits - Cranks and Jerkbaits
When targeting yellowfish on artificials, hard baits like crankbaits and jerkbaits bring a completely different dynamic to your fishing—covering water fast, triggering reaction strikes, and imitating fleeing baitfish or small forage species.
Crankbaits and jerkbaits are both hard-bodied lures designed to imitate baitfish, but they differ in action, retrieve, and when they shine on yellowfish.
Crankbaits are compact, hard-bodied lures fitted with a diving lip that forces them down into the strike zone. As you retrieve, they produce a constant wobble and vibration that attracts fish from a distance
For yellowfish:
- Ideal for searching large areas of river or dam
- Excellent in slightly stained water or current
- Best when fish are actively feeding
- Works well around rocks, ledges, and drop-offs
The constant movement creates reaction strikes—yellowfish often hit out of instinct rather than hunger.
Jerkbaits are slender, minnow-shaped lures worked with rod twitches and pauses, creating an erratic darting action.
For yellowfish:
- Perfect for clear water conditions
- Deadly when fish are following but not committing
- Effective for suspended or pressured fish
- Allows you to hold the lure in the strike zone longer
The key is the pause—this mimics a wounded baitfish and often triggers hesitant yellowfish to strike.
