Football Skirted Jigs – Big Bass Confidence for Structure and Bottom Fishing

Football skirted jigs are a proven bass-fishing lure designed to work along the bottom, especially around rocky structure, hard-bottom areas and deeper water. The distinctive football-shaped jig head helps the lure crawl over rocks and maintain stability, while the full silicone skirt creates plenty of movement and visual appeal as it is dragged, hopped or slowly worked along the bottom.

A football jig is an excellent choice when bass are holding tight to structure or feeding close to the bottom. Pair it with a craw, creature bait or trailer, and you have a highly versatile presentation that can imitate everything from a defensive crayfish to a small baitfish or bottom-dwelling prey.

Why Use a Football Jig?

The wide football-style head helps the jig stay upright and reduces the tendency to wedge between rocks. This makes it particularly effective when fishing rocky banks, points, submerged structure, ledges and hard-bottom areas.

The skirt pulses and flares with every movement, creating an enticing profile even when the jig is barely moving. Bass often pick up a football jig as it pauses or settles back onto the bottom, making a controlled retrieve and occasional pauses highly effective.

How to Fish Football Skirted Jigs

Football jigs can be dragged slowly across the bottom, hopped over structure or crawled along rocky areas. They are particularly effective when bass are holding deeper or when a slower presentation is needed.

Match your jig weight to the depth, cover and conditions. Heavier jigs are ideal for deeper water and maintaining bottom contact, while lighter options can be used in shallower areas.

For the best results, experiment with different skirt colours and trailers to match the local forage and water clarity. Natural colours such as green pumpkin, brown and black are excellent all-round choices, while darker or more contrasting colours can be useful in stained water.
