Frogs

When bass are feeding around heavy cover, vegetation and shallow structure, few lures are as exciting—or effective—as a soft plastic frog. Designed to imitate frogs, small baitfish and other natural prey, soft plastic frogs are a versatile bass-fishing option that can be rigged weedless and worked through areas where traditional lures struggle.

Soft plastic frogs are particularly effective around grass, lily pads, reeds, flooded vegetation, timber and other heavy cover. Their weedless presentation allows anglers to cast directly into the thick stuff, work the lure slowly across the surface or retrieve it through submerged vegetation without constantly getting snagged.

Depending on the design, soft plastic frogs can be rigged in several ways. Texas-rigging is a popular choice for fishing through heavy cover, while weightless rigs provide a subtle, natural presentation. Adding a suitable hook or weight can also allow the frog to be fished below the surface, making these lures useful when bass are holding deeper in or underneath vegetation.

One of the biggest advantages of soft plastic frogs is their versatility. They can be popped, twitched, dragged, hopped or swum, allowing you to match your retrieve to the mood of the fish. Around thick cover, a slow, deliberate presentation can tempt bass hiding in ambush positions, while a faster retrieve can imitate fleeing prey.

For South African bass anglers, soft plastic frogs are a great addition to the tackle box when fishing weedy dams, shallow cover and structure-rich areas. They are especially useful when bass are holding tight to cover and require an aggressive, weedless presentation.

Whether you're targeting largemouth bass in thick vegetation or working shallow structure during the warmer months, soft plastic frogs give you the confidence to put a lure where the bass are hiding.
