BATTERY LIFE EXPECTATION
The DC31 battery has a 1 year manufacturer’s warranty (carry-in owing to normal use) / 200-300 Cycles @ 80 % Depth of Discharge in Leisure / Marine Use.
The DC31 battery has a 6 Month manufacturer’s warranty (carry-in owing to normal use) / 200-300 Cycles @ 80 % Depth of Discharge in Inverter / Standby / UPS Use.
This translates roughly to 200-300 Loadsheddings of 2.5 - 4 Hours Duration (Dependent on load) or 4 - 5 Years Life on Float Charge (Whichever comes first)
Failure to allow sufficient Recharge Time between Loadshedding Events to achieve at least 90 % State of Charge results in ABNORMAL WEAR AND TEAR due to the battery continuously and repetitively operating in the lower band of State of Charge. An analogy would be operating the Pneumatic Tyres on your car at low pressure (Voltage is "Electrical Pressure")
Fully Discharged Batteries take +- 8 – 16 Hours to fully recharge at the recommended charge rate of 10 % of Capacity. (+-10A Charge on a Wet Cell Calcium Deep Cycle Battery)
We highly recommend that you size your battery accordingly to achieve 4+ hours runtime to Full Discharge (10.5 Volts) Two DC31 Batteries will run 350 Watts of Load for FOUR Hours before reaching the Low State Of Charge Cut Off Voltage.
This results in a Discharge of approximately 50% on a 350 Watt Load after the end of each 2 Hour Loadshedding event, and, at some time during a 24 Hr period, an extended "rest period" of 10 hours during which the battery can fully Charge to 100 %.
During Eskom Stages 1 - 4 the average loadshedding is 2 hours, this means that the battery will be discharged to +-50% during these Stages 1 - 4, leaving 5 hours charge time (about 50 Ah) to reach "Near Full State of Charge" between Load Shedding events, and, at some time during a 24 Hr period, an extended "rest period" of 10 hours during which the battery can fully Charge to 100 %. (This is the "Rest Period"):
During Periods of Sustained Stage 5 and higher Load Shedding Events we would suggest reducing loads to bare minimum items needed / turning the inverter output off if not in use / Increasing battery capacity to 4 X batteries and charging current to 20A per battery.
WE RECCOMEND USING THE DC31 (de-coded - Deep Cycle - Group 31 Case Size Marine Deep Cycle Battery) in Domestic Home Inverter Systems!
Batteries failing due to deep discharges and not being allowed to FULLY recharge between loadsheddings will result in battery failures which are not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.
Batteries take +- 8 – 16 Hours to fully recharge. (+-10A Charge)
We highly recommend that you size your battery accordingly to make 8 hours runtime
This will mean the battery will be at 50% state of charge at the end of a loadshedding.
We strongly recommend that non-essential items are turned off during loadshedding.
Batteries with reduced runtimes indicate that the battery is reaching / reached it's end of cycle life and should be replaced
General life in standby use during occasional stage 1 - 2 loadshedding: 1 - 3 Years
Design Life: 3 - 5 Years (In standby use, kept on charge, not discharged)
We strongly recommend that non-essential items are turned off during periods of intense loadshedding. Also, Switch off items like the TV set or your computer when sleeping or absent from home, if possible, place the Inverter Charger in "Rest Mode" (Charge, but Do Not Invert) if absent from home or sleeping. Common Sense Prevails!
Batteries with reduced runtimes indicate that the battery is reaching / or is about to reach it's end of cycle life and you should plan a battery replacement
