Lipless Crankbaits for Bass Fishing

Lipless crankbaits are one of the most versatile hard lures in any bass angler’s tackle box. Designed with a compact, streamlined profile and an internal rattle system, these sinking lures produce strong vibration and sound that can attract bass from a distance. Whether you’re fishing shallow flats, deep structure, grass beds or open water, a lipless crankbait gives you plenty of options for covering water and triggering aggressive strikes.

Unlike traditional diving crankbaits, lipless crankbaits have no diving lip. This allows you to control the running depth simply by adjusting your retrieve speed, casting distance and how long you allow the lure to sink. They can be retrieved steadily, burned through shallow water, hopped along the bottom or ripped through vegetation.

Why Fish Lipless Crankbaits?

Lipless crankbaits are particularly effective when bass are actively feeding or when you need to locate fish quickly. Their vibration, flash and rattling sound make them excellent search baits, allowing you to cover large areas and find active fish.

They are also extremely effective around grass, rocky areas, points, drop-offs and submerged structure. Try a fast retrieve when bass are aggressive, or slow the lure down and allow it to sink when fish are holding deeper.

How to Fish a Lipless Crankbait

One of the biggest advantages of a lipless crankbait is the number of ways it can be worked. Cast it out, allow it to reach the desired depth and use a steady retrieve. Alternatively, try a lift-and-drop retrieve, allowing the lure to vibrate strongly as you lift it before fluttering back down.

When fishing vegetation, ripping the lure free from grass can create an erratic reaction that often triggers a following bass to strike.
